On Greenland's rugged west coast, overlooking the Davis Strait, lies the small settlement of Kangaamiut. Home to around 300 residents, the community is known for its spectacular natural surroundings, rich fishing traditions and strong cultural heritage.

 

Accessible mainly by boat, Kangaamiut remains one of Greenland's authentic coastal settlements, where fishing continues to form the backbone of everyday life and where visitors can experience traditional Greenlandic culture alongside dramatic Arctic scenery.

 

In Kangamiut Seafood and the Kangamiut Group, we proudly bear the name of this beautiful Greenlandic village, although admittedly, we are challenged on the spelling, let alone the pronunciation!

Our story began in 1975, when Niels Vinther Rasmussen founded Kangamiut Fish Trade together with Jørgen Urne, who was then based in Kangaamiut. Working from a simple office in Copenhagen equipped with little more than a telephone and calculator, Niels began trading frozen seafood sourced from Greenland. Our company's close connection with the settlement inspired our name and reflected the importance of Greenlandic fisheries to our business.

 

A decade later, in 1985, Niels acquired his partner's shares and continued expanding the company. Under his leadership, Kangamiut developed into a renowned international seafood trader, building relationships with suppliers and customers across Europe and beyond. Our company's success was – and continues to be – driven by a combination of detailed market knowledge, long-term partnerships and an emphasis on reliable delivery of high-quality frozen seafood products.

As the business grew, it evolved into what is now known as the Kangamiut Group. Today, Kangamiut Seafood remains the original cornerstone of the wider group, which includes a number of subsidiary and associated companies specialising in seafood trading, and sustainable business development.

 

Our partnership model typically combines Kangamiut ownership with local management, allowing individual companies to operate independently while benefiting from shared expertise and financial support. This collaborative approach has enabled the Group to establish operations across several countries while maintaining a strong focus on responsible sourcing and long-term relationships.

In Kangamiut we place considerable emphasis on sustainability and supporting responsible fisheries. Through parallel initiatives such as Kangamiut Green Land, established in 2021, we have further expanded our environmental ambitions by supporting strategic green initiatives alongside our seafood operations.

 

The name ‘Kangamiut Green Land’ refers back to our origins in Kangaamiut, Greenland, while at the same time referring to the actual purpose of this small but important subsidiary: to act as a central function for strategic planning and operation of specific 'green' initiatives.

Despite our international reach, we continue to acknowledge the settlement that inspired our name. Our business remains family-owned by our founder's wife and their descendants, preserving the values established by Niels Vinther Rasmussen more than fifty years ago.

 

That connection was highlighted in June 2026, when members of the Kangamiut Group ownership family visited the Kangaamiut settlement. The visit symbolised the enduring relationship between the Greenlandic settlement and the company whose identity has been closely linked to it since 1975. While the Kangamiut Group has grown into an international seafood organisation, the visit reflected an appreciation of the community where the company's story first began and whose name continues to represent its heritage.

 

In connection with our visit, the Kangamiut Group donated 50.000 DKK to KTVI, the local volleyball club who plays a vital role in promoting both sport and community spirit in Kangaamiut.

Visiting Kangaamiut with my mother and my daughters was a profoundly moving experience, filled with a remarkable range of emotions: wonder at the breathtaking natural beauty, nostalgia, deep gratitude, and quiet reflection on our company's journey: the values on which it was founded, how far we have come, and the path that lies ahead.

Today, Kangaamiut remains a vibrant fishing community where traditional Greenlandic life continues alongside carefully managed tourism. In many ways, the settlement embodies the qualities that have also shaped Kangamiut Seafood and the Kangamiut Group: resilience, respect for nature, close partnerships and a lasting commitment to the North Atlantic fishing tradition.
