Danmarin’s tilapia farm in Ghana obtains ASC certification

We are very excited to announce that Danmarin’s “Fish & Feeds” tilapia aquaculture facility in Ghana has been granted ASC certification.

In Q3 2021 the Kangamiut Group board requested that Fish & Feeds engage in an aquaculture improvement project aiming at ASC certification to ensure high environmental and social standards at the farm. A pre-assessment audit was conducted in Q4 2021 outlining the areas for improvement needing to be addressed to qualify for ASC certification. In a little more than one year, Danmarin and Fish & Feeds have managed to conduct an impressive range of improvements resulting in ASC certification of the farm in April 2023. Fish & Feeds is among only five ASC certified aquaculture facilities on the African continent; and the 2nd tilapia farm in Africa to obtain ASC certification.

The ASC certification of the farm is in line with our company policy to prioritize MSC (wild caught) or ASC (farmed) products. As the ASC standards are global and not adjusted to Ghana or general African standards, this is a major undertaking. The Fish & Feeds team has overcome numerous challenges on this path, lifting the environmental and employment conditions to a level significantly above local standards.

About Fish & Feeds

Fish & Feeds was established in 2016 as a partnership between Singapore-based Kewalram and Kangamiut-subsidiary Danmarin. The farm constructions started in 2018, and in record time, our colleagues at Fish & Feeds managed to establish the land-based tilapia farm in South East Ghana, producing fresh tilapia for the local market and providing valuable jobs for the local community.

About the ASC

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is an independent non-profit organisation that establishes protocol on farmed seafood while ensuring sustainable aquaculture. The ASC provides producers with a certification of environmental sustainability and social responsibility. For more information please see https://asc-aqua.org/.
