Kangamiut Green Land: Linking fish & forestry

In 2023, Kangamiut Group subsidiary Kangamiut Green Land launched an ambitious afforestation project at ‘Lykkensprøve’ near our head office in Northern Denmark.

The afforestation project serves three main purposes:

  • Sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide by photosynthesis (binding of CO2 in the biomass of the trees)
  • Establishing forest and small lakes to create habitats for plants and animals
  • Offering a recreational area for locals and visitors to enjoy

As an additional benefit, down the line the mature trees will provide clean raw material for construction of buildings and furniture, further adding to the long term carbon storage while providing room for another cycle of young trees to grow.

Afforestation status as per October 2025

Today, two and a half years after we launched the project, we are pleased to announce that the establishment of what will hopefully one day become a mature forest has been completed:

More than 230.000 trees have been planted on approximately 60 hectares of land, and three ponds have been created to generate landscape variation and habitats for plants and animals.

Now, all we have to do is sit back and wait for a few decades while nature hopefully does the job for us in terms of converting carbon dioxide into biomass in the form of mature trees.

A forest for future generations

Given the life span of trees, our afforestation project will inherently primarily be for the benefit of future generations.

While we are very aware that no afforestation project can ever compensate for the climate and ecosystem footprint of our core seafood business, we believe that by investing in forests today, future generations inherit a more stable and sustainable environment, access to clean resources, and the opportunity to enjoy the positive legacy of a restored ecosystem.

In other words, a small – but for us important – step in the right direction.

About Kangamiut Green Land

In 2021, the Kangamiut Group established a new group company whose purpose is to act as a central function for strategic planning and operation of green initiatives.

We named the company Kangamiut Green Land.

Whereas seafood related sustainability activities are a natural part of the daily operation of the main Kangamiut Group subsidiaries, Kangamiut Green Land constitutes the exception: Here, we prioritize and encapsulate terrestrial nature & forestry projects that do not have an inherent relation to our core seafood business.
