According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear, commonly referred to as ‘ghost gear’, contributes significantly to the problem of plastic pollution in the ocean and continues to catch target and non-target species indiscriminately for years.

Our partners in Ilulissat, Halibut Greenland, know this from firsthand experience. The local fishermen and shareholders in Halibut Greenland are therefore particularly motivated to continuously contributing to the removal of lost fishing gear in the Disko Bay area.

Once again in 2024, a full day was dedicated to this endeavor as the Boards of Directors of Halibut Greenland and North Atlantic Seafood decided to increase their contribution to the project to 100.000 DKK each.

The lost fishing gear clean-up project is coordinated and operated by IAPP (The Fishermen's and Hunter’s Association in Ilulissat). This project is at the heart of Halibut Greenland and North Atlantic Seafood’s sustained focus on responsible fishing practices to maintain a healthy ocean and secure resources for future generations.

About Halibut Greenland and North Atlantic Seafood

Halibut Greenland (link) is based in Ilulissat, Greenland, and produces locally caught Greenland halibut and Atlantic cod. The company is primarily owned by the local fishermen who deliver their daily catch from their own day boats and small vessels to Halibut Greenland for processing.

Export of these pristine products to the global market is handled by North Atlantic Seafood, located in Denmark.

Halibut Greenland is a minority shareholder in North Atlantic Seafood and vice versa; both companies are part of the Kangamiut Group.
